Default When is a big team simply because of big ego?

interesting to see agents coming up in the business thinking that having some kind of a monster size team is necessary. Interesting looking at some of the top producers who have been top producers for years and years...they rarely have huge teams. Allan Domb I believe has fewer than 10 people working for him and he sells hundreds and hundreds of homes.
WHY is it that many of these newer agents believe that having their own small army of agents working for them is the way to go?

It is interesting, many new agents or new teams are not really teams but just groups working together pooling expenses. Many new groups are trying the quick growth method (Proctor) to get market share but don't have a bottom line, the thinking goes like this, I will market and spend it all get the big team spend money now and eventually I can cut back, but people rarely do. Therefore many large Teams are not very profitable. I think a large Team only works when it is profitable a hard thing to keep going. I know I have certainly cut back to keep profit in line. this is a great thread.
Its been my observation that big teams almost always are because the agent thinks that they need to have a team to compete. We have had a big team and downsized some time ago to a 4-5 person business. I once thought that the sellers would see a team as some sort of advantage...and thats true to an extent. The sellers didnt really care. All they wanted was their house sold. There was no advantage in the sellers eyes to having a team vs not having a team. Having a big team will also mean far less net. We run 60-70% profit now vs a big team where we were only running 20-25% profit.
